No, probably not) my KLR650.

Everything I added or got ready to add still needs a little more work to actually be 'finished', but it is a step in the right direction!

First off, I added four sets of the six tie-down loops that I planned to add to my trunk lid. Main obstacle right now: Need more hardware (I ran out of sealing washers). Oh, and miscalculated the proper length of the screws to use. I picked up 1.25" flat-head 10-32 screws, and when all was said and done, everything was .25" too long...*sigh*. I guess I'll just get out the Dremel and cut them off, rather than replace them with 1" screws, since I already have them in. I put two sets (inside/outside pairs) on the front and back of the lid so far. I will be adding the other two sets to both sides of the lid to give a cross-strap attachment point as well. Should be pretty secure. As I mentioned above, I'll post pics once I have them, both with and without the intended load.

Next on my farkle list was my Vista-Cruise. I had one of these on an old CX-500 I used to have, and loved it. Well, I finally got one to put on the KLR! Of course, I am going for the standard VC, not the 'Universal' model, as the Universal is just plain HUGE on the KLR grip, which is bordering on too short as it is. The Standard Vista-Cruise is a much more compact design, though it requires some modification of the KLR throttle assembly to make it work. As for right now, I just have the VC in place on the grip, but I haven't secured it to anything yet...therefore, it is currently non-functional. I am working on a suitable modification to remedy this, however! Pics will be posted once I have it finished.

I also picked up a 12VDC outlet (cigar lighter socket) to provide a means of powering some additional items on the bike, like my little air compressor, GPS, radio, or any other 12VDC accessory I may want to be able to plug in. I have the socket, but I need to find a suitable place to put it, then I need to wire it in. I am considering upgrading my fuses to the waterproof blade-type fuse carriers, maybe add a relay-controlled supplemental circuit to allow all accessories to be powered off with the key. I am also thinking about getting a different style of outlet, one that can be panel-mounted, and then installing something like a 'Duchin dash' to mount it to. Not that I won't also use this outlet; I may just mount this to the side of the sidestand switch cover and use it for the compressor, or possibly a heated vest if I get one of those.

Finally, I got a set of driving lights to supplement the anemic KLR headlight, to provide not only extra light for normal riding, but also triple the number of available light sources in the event that the headlight bulb were to burn out...redundency in critical systems is a GOOD thing. ;) Notice I didn't actually say I had them installed yet. The main problem I am facing with the lights is a suitable way to mount them to the front of the KLR. I don't have any front-facing guards to clamp them to, such as I have seen done with the P-D Nerf Bars, or else I would have done that. Nor do I have any desire to drill additional holes in my plastic, or I might consider mounting them directly to the fairing, either on the sides or directly above the headlight. I am considering trying to find some sort of clamp-style bracket that I could use to mount them to the lower fork tubes, or maybe some kind of offset bracket that would clamp to the bottom of the triple-clamp. I just haven't decided what would be the best way to do it. In any case, the lights are a $15 pair of halogen driving lights from Wal-Mart. Cheap, standard bulb...should do the trick. I also picked up a wiring kit they had on clearance for $8, with a relay, more (upgraded?) wiring, and a 'soft switch' with LED indicators and a sticky-back mounting pad (I hope the switch won't mind getting a little damp). Again, photos will be posted once installation is complete.

I still have a few other things that I would like to do, such as replace my doohickey, add a set of real handguards, upgrade by brake lines to braided stainless steel, etc. etc. etc...but like anything else, you have to take these things a step at a time. On a related note, if anyone in the Lincoln, Nebraska area would like to do a tech day, and wouldn't mind road-tripping to Seward, I have plenty of garage space for a few bikes. I might even be persuaded to get the grill out afterwards...who knows! I don't currently have the parts or tools to 'do the doo', but I could, if I knew there was enough interest. With enough takers, and enough notice, I could have a lift available as well (need a good excuse to pick one up).

Knightsabre

Towel Day 2007

Another year, another Towel Day is upon us!

This Friday, get out your towel and keep it with you all day, in rememberance of that most hoopy of froods, Douglas Adams.

Knightsabre

Offline...mostly

It's been a while since I posted anything here, and now the first thing I post is less than great news.

I will be mostly offline for between one and two weeks, due to my hard drive in my Powerbook dying.

I am currently trying to recover any important data off of it before I send it in to Apple for repair. I seem to have gotten my email file, which is the MOST critical, as it contains registration information for many pieces of software that I have registered. I should also have my bookmarks, personal documents folders, and other stuff from my desktop recovered as well.

I'll find out when I get home from work tonight how the data recovery is going. I'm hoping that my HDD will hold together enough to pull the data that I need off of it!

So, until I get my laptop back from Apple, I may not be able to get to my regular email account. I don't know if I *WANT* to see how big my junk mail folder will have gotten in that amount of time!

I am able to check my Gmail box, so if you have that address and need to get in touch with me, use that one for the time being.

At least I opted for the Applecare plan on this laptop, so the HDD repair is covered. Also, as I understand it, Apple will also give the entire laptop a once-over, just to make sure the HDD isn't the only thing going out on it.

Knightsabre

Motorcycle Touring

It's been a while since I posted anything here...gomen!

Over Thanksgiving this year, the weather was EXTREMELY nice all week, so I took advantage of it and took a little tour on my motorcycle!

I usually visit my parents in South Dakota every Thanksgiving, and this year was no exception. I just did it on two wheels instead of four this year! ;)

This is also officially the longest ride I have taken on a motorcycle so far, at just a little over 400 miles, round-trip. The temperatures were unbelievable for November in Nebraska/South Dakota, seeing at least one thermometer along the way at almost 70F degrees on Wednesday! It was a bit cooler on the way back home Saturday, not getting much above 53F degrees.

Anyway, the picture was taken on Saturday Nov. 25th, just south of Yankton on Hwy. 81.

This was just the first of what I hope will be many motorcycle trips I will take. I am already planning another one for next summer, though I don't know if that will be my NEXT trip. ;)

Knightsabre

Saying goodbye to an old friend...

Dave (Boardo, as many of us called him) was a good friend. He passed away this past Thursday, July 13th. He was 40.

It is never easy to lose a friend, especially someone like him. Dave was always upbeat, kind, friendly and willing to listen. He was also quick with a joke, one-liner, or movie quote (his specialty) to lighten any mood and bring a smile to your face. No doubt the regular members of a particular group of local modemers will think of him anytime any number of movies are watched, but in particular 'The Princess Bride' ("Mawwiage!") or 'MST3K: The Movie' ("I'm not an alien!" & "Hey, the floors look GREAT!").
Dave and I had DJ'ed wedding receptions together, and I personally DJ'ed Dave and Stephanie's reception. Music was always a big part of Dave's life, and he enjoyed playing it as much as anyone I have known.

Friend, fellow DJ, "partner in crime" on more than one occasion...you'll have to play this gig without me.

No more "Huzzah, and well met!". Especially if it's something that I think I want to get noticed a little easier than on my personal server.

Knightsabre

Towel Day

Today is TOWEL DAY, so grab your towels, you hoopy froods, and tell any strags who ask what it's all about...rememberin Doug Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Knightsabre

NDK Photos Link

Ok, here it is, as promised: http://www.thecrucialrealm.net/gallery/ndk_9

Enjoy!

Knightsabre

NDK - I've seen some great costumes here already, and there are going to be more coming tomorrow! I don't have any of my photos posted yet, but I will have them up fairly soon. I'll post the link when I get them put up, so keep checking back!

On another note, yes, I am typing this up on ecto, and so far I am liking it quite a bit! I will have to update my main blog site to be able to use this there, but I plan on doing that soon anyway. Then I will be able to see how ecto will work there, too!

As always, keep checking back for more news, and I promise, I will have photos up soon!

Knightsabre

Trying something new...

I've been considering a readily compatible means of composing offline blog posts rather than using a text editor and having to copy/paste the results into the web interface. So, I find myself trying ecto, a multi-platform blog editor. This looks to be a fairly full-featured editor, compatible with MULTIPLE blog protocols, including every one that I use. It seems pretty nice so far, and this test posting is my first time using it. I'll be giving it more of a workout this coming weekend, when I will be attending Nan Desu Kan, the anime convention held in Denver, Colorado every year.
Be looking for news, both here and at my other blogspace, The Crucial Realm!

Knightsabre

Alton Brown in Omaha!

This weekend I had the opportunity to meet one of my favorite Food Network personalities, Alton Brown!
He was appearing at Nebraska Furniture Mart in Omaha, NE demonstrating appliances for GE.
After the presentation (and samples of the food he cooked for the demonstration - yum!), he signed books and posed for pictures with everyone in the audience. I'm IN JAPAN!!! The flight was long and tiring, ten hours in the air from Seattle to Narita! I did manage to sleep for most of it, but I was awake in time for both meals. The flight itself was fairly uneventful, a couple instances of some turbulance, but mostly smooth.
Customs also went much smoother than I orignally anticipated! The thing that took the most time there was the long line to get through the passport check...over an hour! That was when I realized that maybe checking a bag might have been a better idea...but in the end, I'm still glad I didn't. The return trip, though, may be different! I'm seriously considering buying a large roll-away suitcase to haul the souvenirs in.

Anyway...the first night, I was met at the Omiya bus station by Tami Miyamoto (Borchard), the daughter of a friend of my father's. She had arranged a place for me to stay, and I was very glad for it! I stayed with Kazuyuki Kobayashi and his family, which was a very interesting experience for me! Very "modern traditional", which was fun to experience! We stayed up and spoke in english about different things, I practiced a little bit of my very limited Japanese, and I think we communicated fairly well overall. I spent my first night on a traditional japanese bed (futon) in a tatami room! This was something I was wanting to experience for a long time! The next morning, Mrs. Kobayashi had to work, so I didn't see her again, but her husband made breakfast for me: traditional-style japanese breakfast consisting of rice, miso soup, fried egg and ham, and cut cucumbers and tomatoes. Oishii! After breakfast he drove me to church.
Church was a interesting experience as well! Omiya Zion Lutheran Church is a Japanese Lutheran Church, associated with the LCMS. The tunes for all the hymns are the same, but they sing them in japanese! Also, the liturgy is the same, except for being in japanese (of course). This all led to being a very familiar setting, and made me feel quite at ease. After the service was over, Tami introduced me to the congregation, explaining who I was and why I was in Japan. They all made me feel very welcome! The congregation then had tea and cookies downstairs, and I spoke to a few of the members (in english, with a bit of japanese here and there) for a bit. Again, everyone was very friendly! Then Tami, her friend Mika and I went down the street to a restaurant, Coco's, for lunch. Coco's seems to be a family-style restaurant, serving "American" food as well as Mexican, Italian and Japanese. It was all very good! We then went to see a Bonsai 'garden', where people can go to learn how to make bonsai, and also buy bonsai. I would have loved to take some pictures there, but they didn't permit photography. There were some very beautiful bonsai, though! Then we went to old Saitama City, which is an older community with traditional old japanese architecture containing MANY different shops! I tried some [rice cake on a stick] sprinkled with black sesame seeds at one shop (again, oishii!), then bought a set of japanese [pajamas] at another. We also stopped at a couple candy shops, where I picked up some fruit-flavored hard candies in a tin (a-la Grave of the Fireflies), some traditional Momo-chan candies, and a pair of manekineko, one black and one white. We also stopped at a small restaurant where I tried some sweet-potato beer (hai, oishii!), then went to a different restaurant to eat. The second restaurant was a more traditional style place, serving mainly only poultry dishes. I had a duck filet on a stick, plus chicken yakitori, and fried riceballs (oishii again!). We then went back to the church, but on the way we stopped at a grocery store to pick up some fruit as a thank-you gift to the pastor and his wife, who let me stay at the parsonage tonight.
In everything, I can see God's hand working, helping me out every step along the way.

Well, it's late, and I have an early start in the morning, as we will be going to the Ghibli Museum early, and it takes a while to get there on the train. So, I'll wrap this up for tonight. (Tatami and futon again...I love it!)

Knightsabre

2005-07-03 (Monday)
Today was the day I had lined up to go to the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. I was ready! One little wrinkle, though: it had started raining the night before, and it didn't stop. Also, the forecast called for rain for the rest of the day, at least! Welcome to Japan in the rainy season! Oh well, at least there were umbrellas! Tami again played tour guide (or translator, at the very least!) and picked me up at around 7:45 am. The pastor's wife fixed me breakfast, again a traditional japanese-style breakfast with rice, miso soup, eggs, Spam (I believe, but it was good!) and cut raw(?) ocra. It was VERY good, and not at all asked for or expected! The kindness of strangers I have been experiencing thus far has been nothing short of phenomenal! In any case, we walked to the train station, and took the train one stop to Omiya Station, where we changed trains to get to Mitaka. We rode that train to Shinjuku Station, where we changed trains to the Chuoo line that would take us to Mitaka. At Mitaka Station, we met up with Amber and Lauren, two other Americans who are in Japan teaching English. We then got on board the Ghibli Museum bus which took us directly to the museum. As we entered, the attendents told us there was no photography allowed inside the museum (I already knew about this going in), and we went inside. YAY! I showed by advance pass at the entrance desk, and was given my movie ticket, which is a small cardboard ticket containing a 3-cell sequence from one of Miyazaki-san's films (mine was from Porco Rosso!)
Inside the museum, we went through the first room, which contained displays about animation, including an old-style zoetrope, as well as a large 3-D model strobe-zoetrope, which was VERY kewl, indeed! It would sit motionless for a little bit, then the lights in the case would dim, the model platform would start to spin, and the strobe lights came on, animating the entire scene!
We finished in that room, then went on to the movie theater. The only films they show are special animated shorts done just for the museum. The film we saw was "May and Catbus" which featured the characters from My Neighbor Totoro. May goes out to play on a windy day, her little bag over her shoulder, and climbs to the top of a small hill. There she takes out a box of caramels, carefully takes out and unwraps one, and just as she is about to eat it, a huge gust comes along, spinning her around, and snatching the wrapping paper from the caramel from her grip. She manages to get the caramel in her mouth, but she is chased around the yard and into the house by a tiny whirlwind, which is carrying the wrapper from her caramel. When she gets the whirlwind into the house, she closes the door behind it so it can't get out, and after a few seconds, she grabs the whirlwind, which turns into a tiny catbus! I won't go into any more of that here, but suffice it to say it was VERY cute! It was also really fun to hear all the little kids around us shouting "NEKOBASU! NEKOBASU!", which is japanese for "cat-bus"!
That is one thing I will say about the Ghibli Museum: it is a place for kids to come and be kids, no matter what their age! Many of the exhibits are "hands-on", or out in the open, and anywhere there is something that needs to be watched they had an attendant on hand. It was really neat to see all the kids having such a good time, but I also had a REALLY fun time there myself! Tami and I went up to the roof of the museum, where the Laputan Robot Soldier and one of the Labutan building blocks was located. This wasn't "inside" the museum, so I got out my camera and had Tami take a picture of me with the robot soldier, then I took one of her with it as well. It was raining, otherwise I would have tried taking a few more pictures of it! The room directly below the robot soldier is the catbus playroom, which is for kids only! After watching the kids jump around on the almost-life-sized catbus, we went into the book shop, and then to the gift shop. Shortly after this we left to find some lunch, as the food at the Straw Hat Cafe in the museum was fairly high. I know I will be coming back here again whenever I come back to Japan!
After lunch we went to Tokyo Dome City, which is where the Tokyo Dome is located, as well as a large shopping mall. We looked around the shops, then went to eat at a Hawaiian restaurant owned by a former sumo wrestler from Hawaii. The food there was GREAT! After that, we went to the Baskin Robbins for dessert, and had a small encounter with some of the local high school boys, who recognized us as "gaijin", and tried to ask us questions in English. One of them asked me (in fairly broken english) whether I had been to Japan before. When I answered him "First time", all the rest of the boys exclaimed their amazement at their friend's prowess in english, and he looked pretty pleased with himself as well! I was told by one of my companions what else they were saying, and that they thought they might have had a bet about whether or not I could understand him. It was kinda fun, in any case. After all the fun and games at the gaijin's expense, I got my single-regular-dip grape sorbet on a sugar cone and left with the rest of the group. We then basically just hung out in the mall's common area, talking about japanese life, strange things they have seen, and other such matters. The fountain came on at 8:00 PM with a music/light show, which we watched. We then got all our things together and proceeded back to Omiya Station. After much discussion about the lack of places for me to stay, I finally decided to bite the bullet and rent a hotel room for the night, which is where I am now. I am only a couple blocks from Omiya Station, and that is only a couple stops away from Tami's area. So, I will be meeting up with her again for a "down-day", where she doesn't have to be running around all over, and I can do some laundry, cash in some traveller's checques, and just take it easy for the day. This will be alright, since I was invited to dinner at one of the other church member's homes that evening, as well. These people are all so nice!

Well, I should have more to write later about all this, so good night for now!

Knightsabre

Seven Days and Counting...

Yes, that's right. Only seven more days until I take to the skies to visit the Land of the Rising Sun!
I've been busy finalizing all the little things that need to be done, such as arranging a house-sitter, picking up my traveller's cheques, making arrangements to get to/from the airport, etc.

I am SO ready for this! :)

I've also been trying to get things taken care of at work such that it will minimize the effects of my absence for two weeks. This is easier said than done, as I am the ONLY person at work doing my job, and some people seem to think that things are just going to fall apart if I'm not just around the corner to patch them up! Don't get me wrong, it's nice to be needed...but as the saying goes, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". We turn into one of the parking lanes close to the front door of the store, and the SUV in front of me STOPS. Apparently, the driver saw someone walking to the door of their car, and decided that they would wait for them to load up and back out. Meanwhile, I was right behind them, with another car behind me.
One minute goes by...
Two minutes go by...
Three minutes go by...I turn on my hazard lights, turn off my headlights, and take my car out of gear...
Four minutes go by, and I am tempted to get out and ask if they are having car trouble... ;)
Just as five minutes are ticking by, the car they are waiting for is finally ready to back out. The SUV takes their space, and I can move again!
Not four more parking spaces later, there are TWO empty spaces...FOUR...SPACES...AWAY....
Have people gotten SO lazy, that they will block traffic for five minutes so they won't have to walk 40 feet? It doesn't take that long to walk that far, as evidenced by the fact that by the time I got out of my car and walked past the space they waited for so patiently, they were nowhere to be found.
I personally think that people who do this should have their drivers licenses revoked. It's just plain inconsiderate, and to a certain level, creates an unsafe condition for everyone around them. The person immediately behind them can't move around them, and many times can't back up safely, if at all, either.
In any case, I had to get this off my chest...

Knightsabre

DVD Collection List

Here is a link to a list of my current DVD collection:

http://www.intervocative.com/dvdcollection.aspx/Knightsabre

Knightsabre

Computer Woes

Well, I finally dug into my laptop to figure out what is causing it to run so poorly...and I found it.

My cooling fan is now dead. Not only that, but the model is old enough that it won't be cheap to fix.

This is yet another reason why I want to switch to a Powerbook...the Powerbook is designed to operate properly WITHOUT a fan...so no moving parts in the thing apart from the drives. So far, it seems to be working very well! I like the automated Junk filters, which I can fine-tune very easily, as well as the fact that T-bird also allows me to import all my folders and addresses from Outlook quite painlessly! There is something that I have gotten used to in Outlook that I haven't seen yet in T-bird, however: custom view settings per folder (preview pane open on trusted filtered folders, but not on Inbox proper or Junk/Spam or otherwise suspect folders). On the other hand, I like how T-bird handles HTML in email, blocking the downloading of images/etc in messages until I authorize it, or even sanitizing it completely if I desire. Mostly, however, it will be a process of getting used to something different for a while.

The same thing applies to the browser side of the equation. I had been using the Crazy Browser overlay for IE, which gives me tabbed browsing, bookmark groups, and a few other things. I am now using Firefox 1.0, which is a nice little program! Again, however, there are a few things that I have grown accustomed to that I no longer have. In particular, I miss the ability to re-organize the tabs, which I could do in Crazy Browser (and, I will also note, in Mozilla proper). I think I'll also miss the tab navigation technique in CB, as well, which consists of sets of buttons onscreen which either scroll the tab bar, take you to the first/last tab, or step you sequentially through the tabs in either direction. However, with Firefox's ability to use plugins, perhaps someone could build this functionality into it!

I have also installed the latest version of Mozilla itself, and will be experimenting with that from time to time as well.

As far as Outlook and IE are concerned at this point, I say "NO MORE!"

Knightsabre

Photography Show

It's official now! I'm the lone LAN administrator/IS technician at my workplace.

Knightsabre

Photography Show

For the month of August, I have samples of my photography on display at The Coffee House in downtown Lincoln, NE.
The majority of the prints are black & white, but there are a few color prints as well.

One thing, however...I stopped in yesterday (8-2-2004) to check things out, and noticed that my photos haven't been hung yet. I am hoping this will be resolved soon...preferably this week.

If you stop in, you will be able to tell my work, as mine is all framed.

In any case, stop down and check it out, and have a great cup of coffee while you are wandering around!

Knightsabre

Old becoming New...

It's official now...I have my grandfather's old 1956 Ford F100!

OLD truck....NEW to me!

I have plans for restoring/modifying MANY things on this truck!

I'll be posting links to pictures soon...

Knightsabre

First Post!

Ok, ok...all kidding aside, this is my first post to my Blogger!

Since I have other blogspaces online, I may not always put something here...but I may also duplicate or link posts between my different blogs, if I think they are important enough to spread around... :)

Knightsabre
