Well, I finally dug into my laptop to figure out what is causing it to run so poorly...and I found it.
My cooling fan is now dead. Not only that, but the model is old enough that it won't be cheap to fix.
This is yet another reason why I want to switch to a Powerbook...the Powerbook is designed to operate properly WITHOUT a fan...so no moving parts in the thing apart from the drives. Add to that the fact that Apple actually designs their computers to be maintained by the users, if they desire, plus the lack of the "Microsoft Tax" and all the headaches associated with that.
I can't wait...

UPDATE: My laptop's battery is now history...yet one more nail the the old VAIO's coffin. Add to this the fact that it will seemingly randomly drop my USB and Firewire (iLink/IEE-1394) drives, or even when I brush against the cable or move the laptop itself...(Terribly annoying when playing music off the external drives!)
Oh, and a correction to the previous post. Powerbooks DO have cooling fans...my mistake!
